Marder 1A3 variant is a variant that is most used by the German Army. As a combat vehicle, Marder can cross the water to a depth of 1.5 meters. If equipped with additional equipment, combat vehicles can traverse water up to a depth of 2.5 meters. Marder using cog Diehl tracks are fitted with rubber pads.
Since its inception until today there are several variants Marder has been produced is:
1. Marder 1 (1971 -): Marder 1 with Milan: a Milan missile launcher is suitable for all Marder between 1977 and 1979.
2. Marder 1A1 (+) (1979-1982): Using 2 autocannon 20 mm caliber ammunition allowing charging alternately, night vision equipment including thermal imager and image intensifier. Infantry capacity reduced to five. Applied to 674 Marder vehicles between 1979 and 1982.
3. Marder 1A1 (-) (1979-1982): the A1 (+) without a thermal imager. A number of 350 Marder upgraded to this variant.
4. Marder 1A1A3: an upgrade of the A1 variant with radio equipment cryptographic SEM 80/90.
5. Marder 1 1A1A as A1 but without passive night vision equipment. Number Marder expandable to 1,112 units this variant.
6. Marder 1A1A4: Varian Marder A1A with the radio equipment cryptographic SEM 80/90.
7. Marder 1A1A2: Marder variants are converted from A1 to A2 variants belonging turret.
8. Marder 1A1A5: Upgrade variants a1a2 with the radio equipment cryptographic SEM 80/90.
9. Marder 1A2 (1984-1991): Between 1984 and 1991, all the German Marder upgraded to the A2 variant, substantial modifications including suspension, fuel tank, cooling system and water-jet cleaning system. In addition to the installation of a new sighting system, no longer use search tools infrared light. All German Marder is equipped with thermal imagers except for the more than 674 units Marder A1 who already have this device.

13 Marder 1A5 (2003-2004): Additional protective armor and renovations on the interior to protect personnel from injury due to explosions and pounding moment landmine. Only applied to the 74 units 1A3 variant.
14. Marder 1A5A1 (2010-2011): Equipped with air conditioning system, jammer for IED and multi-spectral camouflage. In December 2010 ten units Marder upgraded to this variant, then continued at 25 units in August 2011.
Although it has been operated in large numbers for 38 years, new Marder tank combat experience gained in fact the first time to protect an outpost of German troops attack Taliban insurgents located in Chahar Dara district, Kunduz province, Afghanistan, on July 2009. Marder action at the battle and killed and wounded dozens of Taliban insurgents. After the incident, Marder tanks also been involved in combat.
